The Northern Spencer Gulf Gallery

Maritime history in the Whyalla area

Matthew Flinders in 1802 and Louis-Claude de Freycinet in 1803 were the first Europeans to navigate the northern Spencer Gulf. The display reflects their efforts and the following early maritime history in the Whyalla area. The Spencer Gulf is home to a variety of marine species including large populations of sharks. In geological terms, the coastal terrestrial environment is one of the oldest on Earth.
